I’m fB, and I’ll be taking over the blog from now on!
I’ll be introducing some of the vintage items available at LA JAZZ, as well as the latest audio equipment and other interesting products.
So, let’s get started with today’s featured product: the JBL C46 “Minigon” a vintage JBL speaker system.

With its compact cabinet, the C46 “Minigon” packs JBL’s signature high-efficiency performance and dynamic sound into a small package. Despite its size, it offers fast response and excellent attack, making it particularly well suited to vocals, jazz, and other vocal-oriented music. It also delivers the clear, powerful mid and high frequencies that are characteristic of JBL speakers.
The distinctive design and presence of a vintage JBL are another major attraction. It works not only as an audio component, but also as a stylish piece of interior décor with plenty of vintage character.
Thanks to its compact size, the Minigon is also a great choice for spaces where there isn’t room for large speakers. It is especially well suited to desktop setups and small- to medium-sized listening rooms for anyone who wants to enjoy the classic sound of vintage JBL.
The first thing you notice when listening to the JBL C46 “Minigon” is just how lively it sounds, especially considering its compact size.
It has an especially wonderful synergy with vocals and jazz, producing a sense of energy that makes the sound image feel as though it is coming forward toward you.
The speakers also have a fast transient response, allowing subtle nuances in cymbals, piano, brass, and other instruments to come through beautifully.
While the Minigon does not offer the overwhelming scale and physical impact of a large JBL system, it has its own strengths: the coherence and responsiveness that come with a compact speaker design. These qualities make it particularly enjoyable when listening from a relatively close distance.
When playing older jazz recordings, in particular, the energy and excitement of the music come through in a very direct and engaging way.
Rather than presenting a highly polished, modern sound, the Minigon has the kind of character that lets you feel the musicians’ breath, the presence of the instruments, and the raw energy of the performance—qualities that are quintessentially vintage JBL.
Size, design, and sonic character: the Minigon is an exceptionally appealing speaker in every respect. Another one of its great strengths is how easy it is to listen to for long periods without getting tired of its sound.
As a rare vintage speaker that captures a piece of JBL’s history, the C46 “Minigon” is also an excellent choice for collectors.
Personally, it’s one of my favorite speakers!
