This unit was developed during the era when Victor was under the umbrella of RCA Corporation of America. While inheriting the design philosophy of RCA’s renowned “LC-1A” and its dedicated “MI-11411” cabinet, this studio monitor system was uniquely designed for the Japanese domestic market.
The system uses the extremely rare professional speaker units “SK-2049A” and “SK-2047A,” manufactured by Victor Japan in the 1960s. These units were produced and supplied in limited quantities exclusively for broadcasting stations and recording studios, and were never sold to the general public. Very few examples remain today, and they are now highly regarded and extremely rare in the world of vintage audio.
The greatest feature of this system is that, unlike the RCA LC-1A’s coaxial two-way configuration, it adopts a two-way system with separate full-range and tweeter units: the SK-2049A full-range driver and the SK-2047A tweeter. By using an independent unit configuration rather than a coaxial design, this system reflects a uniquely Japanese design philosophy focused on optimizing each frequency range and improving the clarity of sound imaging.
The SK-2049A is a high-efficiency, highly responsive full-range driver using an Alnico V magnet. It offers rich mid-low frequencies, a natural tonal character, and a smooth midrange response. The SK-2047A, on the other hand, is a compact tweeter responsible for detailed, clear, and open high frequencies, enabling wide-range sound reproduction with excellent resolution overall. The SK-2047A also retains the propeller-type horn used in the original RCA-manufactured LC-1 coaxial two-way system, and Victor Japan’s precision engineering is highly regarded.
These units are housed in a sealed wooden cabinet modeled after the RCA MI-11411. Together with Victor’s own acoustic design, the system was used at the time as a high-precision studio monitor. The cabinet is designed to bring out the full performance of the units through high-density wood materials and a robust internal structure. Careful attention can be seen in every detail, including the placement of terminals and damping materials, as well as vibration control measures. Both the exterior and internal construction demonstrate a very high level of completion.
As original RCA LC-1A and MI-11411 systems continue to rise sharply in value worldwide, this Victor Japan SK-2049A + SK-2047A system is attracting attention as “a high-precision alternative that evolved uniquely in Japan.” Although its appearance is strongly inspired by the original, its structure is a serious professional-spec design that emphasizes flexible tuning and reproducibility through a separate two-way configuration.
