[Overview]
This is a pair of 3-way, 3-speaker systems manufactured by TRU-SONIC in the U.S.A., consisting of a 150W woofer / 80M midrange / 5KT tweeter, housed in their original dedicated TRU-SONIC cabinets.
TRU-SONIC was one of the companies competing at the forefront of the audio industry during the golden age of audio that began around the 1950s.
Engineers from Stephens, which at the time had ties with Western Electric, brought together their accumulated technical expertise, acquired rights to use Western Electric technology and patents, and established TRU-SONIC.
Stephens engineers also participated in numerous projects for other manufacturers, demonstrating their considerable technical abilities. Notable examples include Western Electric theater sound systems and ALTEC’s compact theater system, the famous Iconic.
With the goal of producing high-quality speakers comparable to ALTEC studio monitors, TRU-SONIC introduced its 2-way AXA Series, as well as this 3-way combination consisting of the 150W woofer, 80M midrange, and 5KT tweeter.
Standing alongside ALTEC, which is widely regarded as one of the finest loudspeaker manufacturers in audio history, TRU-SONIC delivers outstanding sound quality.
The smoothness and richness of the mid-to-high frequencies have a character distinctly different from other manufacturers, producing a powerful and highly engaging sound.
In contrast to the relatively flat characteristics of the company’s AXA Series, this 3-way system offers the dynamics and strength unique to a multi-way configuration, producing deep and authoritative bass that answered the demands of listeners at the time.
Driver Overview
The 150W woofer has a strong, extended response reminiscent of the ALTEC 803, with a distinctive, resilient and punchy sound.
The 80M midrange driver delivers excellent sound quality reminiscent of the legendary Western Electric 755A, one of the most highly regarded loudspeakers in audio history.
The 5KT tweeter has a jet-style, or bullet-style, appearance similar to the JBL 075. However, despite functioning as a super tweeter, its presentation is relatively restrained. Rather than emphasizing excessive brilliance, it provides a refined, glossy character and an elegant overall sound.
The smoothness and richness from the midrange through the high frequencies are distinctly different from other manufacturers in a very positive way, while still producing a highly versatile and natural sound.
Thanks to its smooth frequency response, the system contrasts with the more characteristically punchy sound of ALTEC, instead offering a flatter, open, crisp and highly articulate presentation.
The overall sound is tight and well controlled, with particularly impressive clarity in the high frequencies.
The system uses the dedicated 5CX crossover network, with a crossover frequency of 500Hz.
Cabinet Overview
The cabinets are genuine TRU-SONIC made-to-order cabinets, specifically designed for this 3-way speaker system.
TRU-SONIC produced many studio-oriented models, making these refined and stylish consumer cabinets relatively unusual within the company’s lineup.
After several decades of aging, the cabinet wood has become thoroughly seasoned and dry, giving the impression that the sound continues to mature over time.
Despite their age, both the exterior and interior of the cabinets remain in excellent condition.
