Altec 800 system

Voice of Theatre

[Overview]

This is a pair of ALTEC THE 800 System theater speaker systems released in the 1940s.

This model is considered a predecessor to the ALTEC A7, the professional theater speaker system that would later carry the famous “Voice of the Theater” name. The concept behind this theater project was to create the highest level of theater loudspeaker system, and its powerful sound pressure and dynamic sound quality continue to captivate many audio enthusiasts today.

With the addition of the A7 lineup in the 1950s, these systems became widely used not only in theaters but also among private collectors and audio enthusiasts, helping bridge the gap between commercial cinema sound and home audio. Since this is a pre-A7 model from the 1940s, it is now quite scarce and highly collectible.

Originally designed for professional use in movie theaters and similar venues, the enclosures were not built with decorative appearance as the main focus. Instead, they reflect a rugged functional beauty, designed purely to compete through sound performance.

The essential side wings used in theater installations are also included. These side wings play an important role in achieving extended, open bass response. In many ways, the full potential of this system can only be fully realized with the side wings installed. This setup allows you to experience the realistic presence and atmosphere of a theater.

The cabinets are well dried and offer an exceptionally open and effortless sound. Due to their age, the exterior shows signs of use, including paint peeling and scratches, but overall, the condition is good for a vintage item. We have included as many photos as possible for your review.

The edges and diaphragms are both in excellent condition. As shown in the photos, the overall appearance is very clean.

[Specifications]

The low-frequency section is equipped with ALTEC 803A 12Ω 15-inch woofers, delivering an impressive low-end texture with smooth, extended, and glossy bass.

For the high-frequency driver and horn, the system uses the rare ALTEC 802B 15Ω driver. The treble produced through the throat horn has a beautiful shine and clarity, allowing even the fine details of trumpet tones and other instruments to be heard clearly.

This configuration focuses on bringing out the fundamental range of musical instruments to the fullest, creating a truly impressive live sound experience.

The network uses the N800D crossover. It brings out the dynamic character of the mid-to-high-frequency-focused unit configuration while maintaining a sense of stability and balance, resulting in a natural connection between the drivers.

【ALTEC 803A 12Ω】

The 803A is the second model in the 803 series, released between 1947 and 1960.

It was positioned as a successor to the popular 515 woofer of the time. Compared to the 515, the magnet and magnetic flux density are slightly smaller, making it a mid-class woofer. This smaller design proved to be an advantage, giving the unit a desirable bass texture and making it popular as an easy-to-use woofer.

It is also considered a rare unit that later became one of the roots of the 416A woofer.
