This is a studio monitor system manufactured by ALTEC around 1945, using Douglas fir plywood cabinets.
It is a rare model commonly known by the nickname “Silver Box.”
The cabinet features a metal mesh protective grille, flocking, and Douglas fir plywood construction.
The 612 is one of ALTEC’s 61X-series models, affectionately known as the “Silver Box,” and is considered one of ALTEC’s representative models alongside the 612A, 618A, 620A, and A7.
The 612 was designed for professional use and was primarily installed in recording studios and theaters.
Despite its age, both the exterior and interior are in exceptionally good condition.
