Overview
This is a pair of JBL D1004 two-way, three-speaker corner-type speaker systems, released by James B. Lansing from around 1948 to the early 1950s. It is highly regarded as one of JBL’s earliest masterpieces.
JBL is the well-known long-established manufacturer founded by James B. Lansing after his independent departure from Altec, with the vision of creating the speakers he had always imagined.
The D1004 and D1005 are among the valuable D Series systems that the late James B. Lansing personally worked on toward the end of his life. They are traditional speaker systems that later became the foundation for speakers such as the Hartsfield.
Each enclosure is equipped with two 130B woofer units, delivering truly impressive bass power. The high-frequency driver is the gray-type 175, and the network uses the gray-type N1200, recreating the original configuration of the period.
As JBL’s first corner-type speaker system, it is no exaggeration to say this represents its ultimate form. The sound quality is exceptional, surpassing other corner-type systems. Even when compared with JBL’s Hartsfield, I felt the D1004 had the advantage.
Since each cabinet is loaded with two 130B units, there is absolutely no shortage of bass, producing a rich and powerful low end. The sharp, rich, and full-bodied mid-to-high frequencies of the 175 weave beautifully through the bass, creating a sound that is truly breathtaking. I also feel it is more than capable of handling modern audio sources.
Although it may be slightly less rare than the D130B, when comparing practicality alone, the 130B delivers punchy, rich, and heavy bass. The sparkling mid-to-high frequencies of the 175 cutting through that bass are simply outstanding.
The elegant appearance fully enhances the appeal of the sound. The enclosures, grilles, and units are all finished to an exceptional standard. Despite their age, not only the exterior but also the interior of the enclosures are in outstanding condition. As can be seen in the photos, the overall appearance is very clean.
